In the early years of the club's existence, programs were held periodically rather than monthly.
October 10, 2007 ~ Lee Nelson, horticultural speaker and consultant for beautification projects in the Binghamton area, presented a slide program and explained how to keep gardens looking good all year long.
July 11, 2007 at the Lackawanna State Park ~ Members were taken on a nature walk led by Environmental Education Specialist, Angela Lambert. She pointed out many local wildflowers and a few invasive plants. Following the walk, a presentation on herbs was given by Master Gardeners, Selma Etter and Colleen Bobrovcan.
April 12, 2007 ~ Paul Epsom, owner of Greystone Gardens, a specialist garden center in Clarks Summit, spoke at our meeting. Epsom is also The Victory Garden's garden correspondent, hosting the series' "Tried & True" segments and providing viewers with indispensable advice and gardening guidance. He has been featured on WNEP's successful Home and Backyard TV program for well over 400 episodes. In 2003 and 2004 Paul won Garden Globe awards for his work on both of these programs.
November 8, 2006 ~ Kristen of Kristen's Creations on Main Street in Clifford gave a wreath making demonstration
October 11, 2006 ~ Richard Jost, a member of the National Orchid Society and the owner of Jungle Paradise located in Benton, PA presented a program about orchids. A variety of samples from his extensive orchid collection were available for sale.
April 12, 2006 ~ Donna Murphy, a Technology Transfer Specialist with the USDA Forest Service, gave a presentation on Invasive Plants in NE PA. Her lecture focused on defining the term "invasive plant", the characteristics of invasive plants, their degrading impact on our native environments, and ways to protect healthy native plant communities. Brochures including a list of invasive plants in PA were provided by DCNR for members.
October 12, 2005 ~ Molly Philbin, education coordinator for the Earthbox Company, did a presentation on the development, test trials and the resulting product with its application for commercial and leisure gardeners. The system allows for simplified and automatic watering and fertilizing and the elimination of weeding. Equally suitable for flowers and vegetables, the Earthbox can be used on farms, at public sites, on patios, and even to adorn bridges.
The Mountain View Garden Club sponsored its 3rd Speaker's Luncheon on May 4, 2011 at Elkview Country Club at Crystal Lake. The speaker was Jerry Fritz, proprietor of Linden Hill Gardens and Jerry Fritz Garden Design in Ottsville, PA. Jerry is a graduate of Delaware Valley College of Science & Agriculture in Doylestown. He is a garden designer who loves sharing his passion for perennials with others. He has appeared on the Martha Stewart Show on numerous occasions. The garden club sponsored its 2nd Speaker's Luncheon on May 12, 2010 at 11:30 am at Elkview Country Club, Crystal Lake. The speaker was Daniel Krall, Associate Professor at Cornell University; Landscape Architect and Historian of the American Landscape.
A luncheon was held at the Elkview Country Club on May 6, 2009 beginning at 11:30 am. Duane Campbell, the speaker, is a nationally known garden columnist and Master Gardener from Towanda.
Harvest Dance & BBQ Dinners
October 24, 2009 ~ Harvest Dance & Chicken BBQ, a fun evening co-sponsored by the Mountain View Garden Club and the Clifford Township Volunteer Fire Company. The dinner beginning at 6:30 pm at the Fire Hall on Rt. 106 featured delicious Chicken Barbecue, home made dessert, music and dancing!
October 25, 2008 ~ The Garden Club and Clifford Twp. Volunteer Fire Company co-sponsored a Harvest Dance and Chicken Barbecue Dinner with music by DJ Terry Rockwell.
September 29, 2007 ~ Square Dance & BBQ Dinner co-sponsored by the Mountain View Garden Club and Clifford Twp. Volunteer Fire Company.
Friday, June 30, 2006 ~ Clifford Township Bicentennial Celebration Buffet BBQ Dinner & Country Square Dance
The Garden Club was pleased to participate in Clifford Township's Bicentennial Celebration by hosting a Country Square Dance at the Clifford Township Fire Hall. A buffet BBQ Dinner was catered by Munley's Grove followed by a variety of sweet treats made by club members for dessert. Everyone enjoyed music for square dancing and polka, twist, cha cha, swing, jitterbug and others!
